Using Khan Academy for SAT Prep? Here’s What You’re Missing

FREE SAT Test Prep that actually works? Yep, it’s real. IF you know how to use it. We’re talking about Khan Academy of course!

You’re sitting on your couch, with your phone in hand and the SAT on your mind. You discover Khan Academy—and it’s a gem. You plan to solve 25 questions a day, over 175 a week, and 700 in a month. You’ve got an efficient strategy.

Khan Academy is a free and readily accessible educational resource. It isn’t just a random prep site with a bank of questions, it’s endorsed by the College Board– the official SAT platform.

Why Khan Academy Stands Out?

What makes Khan Academy a powerful and user-friendly tool is its strategy to guide you through concepts at your educational level and beyond. Rather than simply scoring your right versus wrong answers, it focuses on helping you understand how to solve problems—backed by solid strategies and wrapped in practical tips and tricks.

Here’s a snapshot of a module for the Math section on Khan Academy. You get to choose the concepts you want to be tested on while also timing yourself to ensure you’re on the right track.

Specifically for the SAT, it provides access to questions that follow the exact template you see on the actual exam. Stuck on a tricky algebra problem, but not ready to give up? It offers step-by-step hints, just like a teacher would, nudging you in the right direction with just the right amount of support.

While you are solving a question, you can get hints before you know if you solved the question right.

It celebrates your correct answers, but it doesn’t leave you hanging when you get one wrong. Instead, it explains every option in multiple-choice questions and breaks down why the incorrect ones are wrong. It also highlights the right approach to solve that specific type of problem.

Both the R&W and Math modules for the SAT section on Khan Academy have thorough explanations and tutorials on mastering each concept.

A standout feature that makes it a great study tool is the variety of questions; you rarely see repetition. This means your practice stays fresh and helps build logical reasoning but without knowing what to expect as the answer choice. The question bank is extensive, keeping you consistently challenged.

And it’s not just about the SAT. If you feel the need to revisit core concepts, the “High School” section on Khan Academy lets you rebuild your fundamentals. In short, Khan Academy acts like a virtual tutor—but only if you know how to go about using it.

Why Students Still Struggle?

I’ve been tutoring students in the SAT for over five years (unofficially), and from my experience, I’ve noticed something significant: students often know about Khan Academy and acknowledge the benefits that it offers, but still find it difficult to improve their SAT scores meaningfully.

Khan Academy is an excellent tool, but like any tool, it only works if you know how to use it strategically. Many students struggle not with the material, but with understanding how SAT questions are designed and what kind of thinking the test expects from them. It’s not just about knowledge—it’s about navigating the logic behind the questions.

That’s why I advise students to take 2–3 months to rebuild their core high-school concepts before diving into full SAT prep mode. This prevents burnout and builds lasting confidence.

The Role of Strategy and Metacognition

This is my experience: trying again and again is admirable, but if you don’t have a strategy and consciously implement it, it can affect your willpower over time. Eventually, your subconscious mind starts believing you’re just not capable—and that’s the real hurdle.

My take: If you’ve set your sights on taking the SAT soon, spare some time to learn how you learn.

This self-awareness, known as metacognition, helps you identify how you think and how you process information. Especially in a post-COVID world, where many students studied in isolation with limited feedback, this skill is often underdeveloped.

Yes, practicing is important, but so is having someone who can believe in you, expertly guide you, and provide you with targeted, constructive feedback. That’s where the real transformation begins.
